The Hidden Dangers of "It Will Be Fine" in Business Decision Making

Jan 30, 2025

How many times have you heard, "It will be fine", “It’ll be grand", or "Let's just roll with it". While optimism is an important trait to have, blanket statements like these can sometimes mask a deeper issue: complacency, lack of due diligence, or even groupthink. As a Red Team Coach and leadership development specialist, I've observed that leaning heavily on these casual reassurances without sufficient critical analysis can be a significant detriment to both business and personal decision-making.

The Pitfalls of an “It Will Be Fine” Mentality

When teams or individuals repeatedly use statements like "It will be fine", they may be unconsciously pushing aside the potential risks or unexplored variables. Over-reliance on such sentiments can:

  1. Limit Critical Thinking: The statement may deter teams from proactively identifying potential problems or considering alternative solutions.
  2. Promote Complacency: By assuming everything will be okay, teams and individuals can become complacent, leading to missed opportunities or overlooked threats.
  3. Engender Group-Think: When everyone goes along with the majority view without questioning, innovation stalls, and risks amplify.

The Power of Red Team Thinking®

Red Team Thinking®, at its core, is about introducing contrarian viewpoints, challenging assumptions, and rigorously testing hypotheses. It involves:

  1. Critical Analysis: Look at a situation from multiple angles, not just the most optimistic one. Asking, “What if it doesn’t work out fine?”
  2. Seeking Contrarian Viewpoints: Actively seek out team members or advisors who might have a different perspective. This is not to be argumentative but to ensure all angles are considered.
  3. Empirical Decision Making: Base decisions on data, facts, and experience rather than emotions or vague sentiments.

By cultivating a culture where Red Team Thinking® is encouraged, businesses can foster a more proactive, analytical, and resilient decision-making process.

If you are in a leadership position or part of a decision-making team, challenge yourself and your colleagues the next time someone says, "It will be fine".

Instead, ask:

  • "Have we looked at this from all angles?"
  • "What are the potential risks, and have we considered them fully?"
  • "Is our decision based on data and experience or just a gut feeling?"
  • "What lies are we telling ourselves?"

Initiate Red Team exercises, either internally or facilitated by a certified Red Team Coach, where a group takes on the role of a potential adversary or critic to highlight vulnerabilities or flaws in a strategy.

Don’t wait for a crisis to realise the importance of critical analysis. Start now, and turn that statement from "It will be fine" to "We've thoroughly assessed this, and here's our informed strategy."

Remember, it’s not about being pessimistic; it’s about being prepared.

Business landscapes are rife with uncertainties. By embracing Red Team Thinking® and avoiding the potential pitfalls of "It will be fine" statements, you are taking proactive steps to ensure the health, success, and longevity of your business.

Stay informed, stay analytical, and always challenge assumptions. Because when you do, you won't just hope it'll be fine—you'll know exactly how and why it will be.
